The Stockton Ports fell into a deep hole early and a comeback fell short as they dropped their last road game 11-8 to the Bakersfield Blaze on Sunday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark. The Blaze compiled seven runs in the first four innings capped by a four-run fourth inning. The Ports got on the board in the sixth after a solo home run from Jose Brizuela. With two-outs, Justin Higley hit an RBI double, Higley scored later in the inning from a passed ball to cut the Blaze lead 7-3. The Blaze got the three runs back in the bottom half of the inning, Chantz Mack smacked a three-run blast to make it 10-3 Blaze. Justin Seager added one more run for the blaze in the seventh with a solo home run of his own.
The Ports started a rally in the eighth, after a quick out Sandber Pimentel walked, followed by a Mikey White double. Justin Higley followed with a two-run double to cut the deficit 11-5. The Ports weren’t done yet as Higley scored on a sacrifice fly. With two-outs and one on, Richie Martin hit a two-run shot to make it 11-8. Their last chance was in the ninth, The Ports had the bases loaded with two-outs, but Melvin Mercedes was picked off at third to end the game.
The Ports (28-35; 55-78) finished their last road trip for the 2016 season at 4-3, they will conclude their season with a seven-game homestand. The Ports return to action on Tuesday to start their three-game series against Visalia Rawhide (31-32; 77-56) at Banner Island Ballpark. First pitch set at 7:10 pm. The Ports will send Kyle Friedrich (3-7, 4.42) to the mound facing is Justin Donatella (4-4, 3.42) for the Rawhide.
